- Our Approach
Therapy That Meets Your Child Where They Are Not Where You Think They Should Be
Individual psychotherapy at Sensory Stepping Stones is not one-size-fits-all. Every child, teen, and young adult who comes through our doors is a distinct individual with a unique history, set of strengths, and set of challenges. Our therapeutic approach is built around that reality.
We specialize in early intervention catching mental health challenges before they become entrenched patterns and in trauma-informed care, which means every interaction is shaped by an understanding of how adverse experiences affect the developing brain and nervous system.
Our therapists work with children, adolescents, young adults, and their families across a wide range of mental health concerns from anxiety and depression to anger management, school avoidance, disrupted attachment, and low self-esteem. Sessions are individual or group-based depending on what will produce the most meaningful results for each client.

- Who We Help
Signs Your Child or Teen May Benefit
From Individual Therapy
Mental health challenges in children and teens rarely announce themselves clearly. They often look like behavioral problems, academic struggles, social withdrawal, or physical complaints. If you recognize any of the following patterns, psychotherapy may be exactly what is needed.
- Persistent anxiety, excessive worry, or fear that is interfering with daily life school attendance, sleep, friendships, or family routines
- Anger management challenges explosive outbursts, aggressive behavior, or extreme reactions that are disproportionate to the trigger
- Social difficulties trouble forming or maintaining friendships, feeling left out, or consistently misreading social cues
- History of trauma including adverse childhood experiences, abuse, neglect, loss, medical trauma, or major family transitions
- Signs of depression persistent sadness, loss of interest in activities they once loved, low energy, or withdrawal from family and friends
- School avoidance or refusal consistent resistance to attending school that is not explained by academic difficulty alone
- Low self-esteem or negative self-talk a pervasive belief that they are less capable, less likable, or less worthy than their peers
- Disrupted attachment patterns difficulty trusting caregivers or forming secure, stable relationships with adults or peers
You do not need to wait for a crisis. Early intervention is one of the most powerful predictors of long-term mental health outcomes. If something feels off — even if you cannot name exactly what it is — reaching out is always the right move.
- How We Work
Eleven Evidence-Based
Therapeutic Approaches
No single therapy modality works for every child. Our clinicians draw from a broad range of evidence-based approaches selecting and combining methods based on each client’s age, presenting concerns, learning style, and therapeutic goals.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Identifies and restructures unhelpful thought patterns that drive anxiety, depression, and behavioral challenges. Teaches practical coping skills that clients use independently between sessions.
Solution Focused Therapy
Uses the natural language of children play as the therapeutic medium. Especially for younger children who cannot yet articulate their emotional experiences verbally but can express them through play.
Trauma-Focused CBT
A structured, evidence-based adaptation of CBT specifically designed to address the cognitive, behavioral, and emotional impact of trauma experiences in children and adolescents.
Mindfulness Techniques for Children and Families
Age-appropriate mindfulness practices that build present-moment awareness, reduce anxiety, and improve emotional regulation delivered in ways that are engaging and accessible for children, teens.
Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)
A specialized protocol for processing trauma that helps clients examine and modify unhelpful beliefs formed as a result of traumatic experiences particularly effective for PTSD.
Sensory Integration Approaches
Therapy informed by sensory processing research recognizing that many emotional, behavioral challenges are rooted in how the nervous system processes sensory information, not just psychological factors.
Person-Centered Therapy
Creates an unconditionally accepting therapeutic relationship in which the client sets the direction and pace of their own growth building intrinsic motivation and authentic self-awareness.
Strength-Based Approach
Centers the therapy around what the client already does well using existing strengths as the foundation for building new skills rather than focusing primarily on deficits and problems.
Animal Assisted Therapy
Incorporates trained therapy dogs into sessions to reduce anxiety, increase engagement, and create a uniquely motivating therapeutic environment for clients who may resist traditional approaches.
Group Therapy
Small, structured therapeutic groups that provide shared experience, peer support, and a safe space to practice social and emotional skills with others who understand similar challenges.
Meditation & Relaxation Training
Guided meditation and progressive relaxation techniques that teach clients to activate their own parasympathetic nervous system reducing anxiety, impulsivity, and emotional reactivity.

- Outcomes & Results
What Families Experience Through
Individual Therapy
Effective psychotherapy produces changes that go far beyond the session room shifts in how a child experiences themselves, relates to others, and navigates the inevitable challenges of growing up.
Greater Self-Awareness & Emotional Vocabulary
Children learn to identify, name, and understand their emotions before those emotions drive behavior replacing reactive outbursts with thoughtful responses.
Improved School Attendance and Engagement
For children with anxiety or school avoidance, therapy identify, reduce the specific barriers gradually rebuilding the confidence, regulatory capacity needed to engage in academic life.
Rebuilt Self-Esteem and Confidence
Therapy creates a space where children feel genuinely seen and valued building the kind of authentic self-esteem that cannot be manufactured through praise alone.
A Personalized Coping Toolkit
Each child leaves therapy with a set of concrete, practiced strategies for managing stress, anxiety, anger, and social difficulty tools they carry into school, home, and every relationship.
Stronger Family Communication
As children develop emotional language and regulation skills, family interactions shift less tension, more understanding, and a greater capacity for repair when conflict does arise.
Trauma Integration and Healing
For children with a history of adverse experiences, trauma informe therapy helps integrate those experiences into a coherent narrative reducing their ongoing behavioral, emotional impact.

- COMMON QUESTIONS
Frequently Asked Questions
No referral is required. Parents, guardians, or clients themselves (ages 18 and older) can contact our office directly to schedule an initial consultation. Simply call (914) 244-4101 or use our online scheduling link. If you reach voicemail, leave your name, number, reason for calling, and a good time to reach you — we return all messages within 24 hours.
If something feels persistently off — even if you cannot name it precisely — reaching out for a consultation is always the right choice. You are not committing to a long-term therapy relationship by making a phone call. Our initial consultation helps you understand what is happening and whether therapy would be beneficial. Early intervention consistently produces better outcomes than waiting for a situation to become a crisis.
We work with children, adolescents, and young adults across a wide age range. Different therapists on our team have specific areas of expertise — some specializing in young children, others in middle school and high school students, and others in young adults and family therapy. During your initial consultation we will match you with the clinician best suited to your child's age and presenting concerns.
There is no standard duration. Some children benefit from a focused short-term intervention of 8 to 12 sessions. Others benefit from longer-term support. The length of therapy is determined by the complexity of the presenting concerns, the rate of progress toward established goals, and the ongoing needs of the child and family. This is always discussed collaboratively and never extended without a clinical rationale.
Still have questions? We’d rather you ask than wonder.
